The 20th edition of the joint military exercise “Yudh Abhyas 2024” between India and the United States kicked off at Mahajan Fields in Rajasthan’s Bikaner on Monday. The joint exercise began with a ceremonial parade at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. The flags of India and the US were hoisted to mark the commencement of the event. This year, the Indian Army is represented by 600 personnel from the Rajput Regiment and other supporting arms and services. Similarly, the US contingent consists of troops from the 1-24 Battalion of the 11th Airborne Division, based in Alaska.
Purpose and Focus of the Exercise
Yudh Abhyas 2024 aims to strengthen joint military capabilities, focusing on counter-terrorism operations in a semi-desert environment. The drills will simulate real-world counter-terrorism missions, including joint responses to terrorist actions, tactical planning, and field training. The exercise operates under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate, which deals with peace and security.
According to Col Amitabh Sharma, PRO Defence, Rajasthan, this year’s drills will focus on inter-operability, allowing both countries to share best practices, tactics, and techniques for conducting joint operations. The exercises will foster camaraderie and defense cooperation, further strengthening India-US bilateral relations.
Introduction of Advanced Weaponry
For the first time, the US will showcase its High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) at the Mahajan Range. This system, with a range of 310 kilometers, has been recently used in the Ukraine War. India, on the other hand, will display its indigenously developed weaponry, highlighting the country’s advances in military technology.
Evolution of Yudh Abhyas
Since its inception in 2004, Yudh Abhyas has grown significantly. The 16th edition was previously held at the same location in February 2021. Over the years, the exercise has evolved in scope, incorporating advanced military tactics and an expanded focus on joint operations in various environments.
