About the Namo Bharat Trains
The Namo Bharat trains are India’s first high-speed Regional Rapid Transit System, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 20, 2023. The initial operational stretch covers 17 kilometers, connecting Sahibabad to Duhai Depot. The NCRTC is the implementing body responsible for developing and managing the RRTS, which aims to improve connectivity between the National Capital Region (NCR) cities.
Current RRTS Corridor and Future Expansion
The Namo Bharat RRTS currently operates a 42-kilometer stretch with nine stations, including Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, and Meerut South. The system has served over 4 million passengers in its first year, showcasing its popularity. With an average speed of 80 km/h (and a maximum of 160 km/h), these trains reduce commute times compared to traditional metro services. The highest passenger footfall was recorded at the Ghaziabad RRTS Station.
The RRTS is set to expand to 54 kilometers, connecting more critical stations like Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar. By June 2025, the entire 82-kilometer corridor will be completed, allowing passengers to travel from Delhi to Meerut in under an hour. This development aims to improve regional connectivity and offer a faster commuting solution across the NCR.
